Problem

Let G=(V,E)G = (V, E) be a simple graph. The complement graph G‾\overline{G} of GG is defined to be the simple graph (V, P2(V)∖E)(V,\, \mathcal{P}_2(V) \setminus E). (Thus, two distinct vertices uu and vv in VV are adjacent in G‾\overline{G} if and only if they are not adjacent in GG.) Prove that at least one of the following two statements holds: • Statement 1: For each u∈Vu \in V and v∈Vv \in V, there exists a path from uu to vv in GG of length ≤3\leq 3. • Statement 2: For each u∈Vu \in V and v∈Vv \in V, there exists a path from uu to vv in G‾\overline{G} of length ≤2\leq 2.
