Problem

Two strings, A and B, are stretched between rigid supports and are under the same initial tension of 120 N120\,\text{N}. • String A: length 0.80 m0.80\,\text{m}, linear mass density 5.0×10−3 kg m−15.0\times10^{-3}\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-1} • String B: length 0.60 m0.60\,\text{m}, linear mass density 8.0×10−3 kg m−18.0\times10^{-3}\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-1} (i) Find the ratio of the fundamental frequencies fA:fBf_A : f_B. (ii) Identify which string produces the higher pitch in its fundamental mode. (iii) The tension in string B is now adjusted so that its fundamental frequency equals that of string A while the tension in A remains 120 N120\,\text{N}. Calculate the new tension required in string B. a. (i) Frequency ratio of fundamentals. b. (ii) Identify higher pitch. c. (iii) New tension in string B for equal frequencies.
