Problem

Suppose VV and WW are finite-dimensional and T∈L(V,W)T \in \mathcal{L}(V, W). Prove that there exist a basis of VV and a basis of WW such that with respect to these bases, all entries of M(T)\mathcal{M}(T) are 0 except that the entries in row kk, column kk, equal 1 if 1≤k≤dim⁡range⁡T1 \leq k \leq \dim \operatorname{range} T.
