Physics — Landau & Lifshitz · particle-in-gravitational-field

Problem

A particle of mass mm moves in a linear potential V(z)=mgzV(z) = mgz for z>0z > 0 and V(z)=∞V(z) = \infty for z<0z < 0. The energy eigenfunctions are Airy functions. (a) Write down the normalized eigenfunction for the nnth energy level in terms of the Airy function Ai\text{Ai}. (b) Calculate the expectation value ⟨z⟩\langle z \rangle for the nnth energy level. (c) Calculate ⟨z2⟩\langle z^2 \rangle and hence Δz=⟨z2⟩−⟨z⟩2\Delta z = \sqrt{\langle z^2\rangle - \langle z\rangle^2}.
