Problem

Assume that the velocity of a CME directed toward Earth is 400 km s−1400\ \text{km s}^{-1} and that the mass of the CME is 101310^{13} kg. (a) Estimate the kinetic energy contained in the CME, and compare your answer to the energy released in a large flare. Express your answer as a percentage of the energy of the flare. (b) Estimate the transit time for the CME to reach Earth. (c) Briefly explain how astronomers are able to ``predict'' the occurrence of aurorae in advance of magnetic storms on Earth.
