Problem

Evaluate the P-wave phase shift δ1\delta_1 for scattering from a hard sphere, for which the potential energy is given by V(r)={∞r<a0r>aV(r) = \begin{cases} \infty & r < a \\ 0 & r > a \end{cases} Express your result in terms of j1(ka)j_1(ka) and η1(ka)\eta_1(ka). Use the leading behavior of j1(ρ)j_1(\rho) and η1(ρ)\eta_1(\rho) for small ρ\rho to show that δ1→−(ka)3/3\delta_1 \to -(ka)^3/3 as ka→0ka\to 0, and thus δ1\delta_1 can indeed be neglected in comparison to δ0\delta_0 [see (13.81)] at sufficiently low energy.
