Problem

Let VV be a finite-dimensional vector space over a subfield FF of the complex numbers, and let SS be the set of all symmetric bilinear forms on VV. (a) Show that SS is a subspace of L(V,V,F)L(V, V, F). (b) Find dim⁡S\dim S. Let QQ be the set of all quadratic forms on VV. (c) Show that QQ is a subspace of the space of all functions from VV into FF. (d) Describe explicitly an isomorphism TT of QQ onto SS, without reference to a basis. (e) Let UU be a linear operator on VV and qq an element of QQ. Show that the equation (U†q)(α)=q(Uα)(U^\dagger q)(\alpha) = q(U\alpha) defines a quadratic form U†qU^\dagger q on VV. (f) If UU is a linear operator on VV, show that the function U†U^\dagger defined in part (e) is a linear operator on QQ. Show that U†U^\dagger is invertible if and only if UU is invertible.
