Problem

Let VV be a finite-dimensional inner product space, and let WW be a subspace of VV. Then V=W⊕W⊥V = W \oplus W^\perp, that is, each α\alpha in VV is uniquely expressible in the form α=β+γ\alpha = \beta + \gamma, with β\beta in WW and γ\gamma in W⊥W^\perp. Define a linear operator UU by Uα=β−γU\alpha = \beta - \gamma. (a) Prove that UU is both self-adjoint and unitary. (b) If VV is R3R^3 with the standard inner product and WW is the subspace spanned by (1,0,1)(1, 0, 1), find the matrix of UU in the standard ordered basis.
