Problem

By rewriting the Fermi--Dirac function f(E)=1eβ(E−μ)+1(29.37)f(E) = \frac{1}{\mathrm{e}^{\beta(E-\mu)} + 1} \tag{29.37} as f(E)=12(1−tanh⁡12β(E−μ)),(29.38)f(E) = \frac{1}{2}\left(1 - \tanh\frac{1}{2}\beta(E - \mu)\right), \tag{29.38} show that f(E)f(E) is symmetric about E=μE = \mu and sketch it. Find simplified expressions for f(E)f(E) when (i) E≪μE \ll \mu, (ii) E≫μE \gg \mu, and (iii) EE is very close to μ\mu.
