Problem

a. Two ideal springs have force constants k1=80 N m−1k_1=80\,\text{N\,m}^{-1} and k2=120 N m−1k_2=120\,\text{N\,m}^{-1} respectively. A particle of mass 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} is attached to them as described below. b. (a) The springs are connected in series and the mass is attached to the free end. (i) Obtain the effective spring constant for the series arrangement. (ii) Hence find the angular frequency and the time period of small oscillations. c. (b) The same springs are now connected in parallel and the mass is attached to the junction of the free ends. (i) Obtain the effective spring constant for the parallel arrangement. (ii) Hence find the angular frequency and the time period of small oscillations.
