Problem

A particle of mass 5 kg5\,\text{kg} initially moves with velocity u=10 i^ m s−1\mathbf{u}=10\,\hat{i}\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. It first experiences an impulse that changes its velocity to v1=10 j^ m s−1\mathbf{v}_1=10\,\hat{j}\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, and then a second impulse that brings its velocity to v2=−10 i^ m s−1\mathbf{v}_2=-10\,\hat{i}\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Calculate the net change in momentum of the particle from the start to the end of the two impulses, and find the magnitude of the net impulse applied.
