Problem

A sonometer wire of length 1.20 m1.20\,\text{m} has linear mass density 4.0×10−4 kg m−14.0\times10^{-4}\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-1} and is kept under a tension of 100 N100\,\text{N}. (i) Calculate the frequency of the second harmonic produced by this wire. (ii) An organ pipe open at both ends is required to resonate with the frequency obtained in part (i) when sounding its first overtone. Determine the length of the pipe, taking the speed of sound in air as 340 m s−1340\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. (iii) If the air temperature rises so that the speed of sound increases by 2%2\%, find the percentage change in the pipe length that would be required to maintain resonance with the unchanged sonometer wire. a. (i) Frequency of second harmonic of wire. b. (ii) Length of open pipe for first overtone resonance. c. (iii) Percentage change in pipe length for new speed of sound.
