Problem

A runner starts at the south-west corner of a rectangular park that is 80 m80\,\text{m} long (east–west) and 60 m60\,\text{m} wide (north–south). She follows the boundary of the park in the following order: 1. Runs east along the southern side at a constant speed of 2 m s−12\,\text{m s}^{-1} until she reaches the south-east corner. 2. Turns and runs north along the eastern side at 3 m s−13\,\text{m s}^{-1} until she reaches the north-east corner. 3. Turns again and runs west along the northern side at 2 m s−12\,\text{m s}^{-1} until she stops at the north-west corner. a. (a) Calculate the total distance covered by the runner. b. (b) Determine the magnitude and direction of the displacement of the runner from her starting point to her stopping point. c. (c) Find the total time taken for the entire run. d. (d) Using your answers above, compute (i) the average speed and (ii) the average velocity for the whole motion.
