Problem

Let X1X_1 and X2X_2 be independent random variables and let Y1=ϕ1(X1)Y_1 = \phi_1(X_1) and Y2=ϕ2(X2)Y_2 = \phi_2(X_2). (a) Show that P(Y1=r,Y2=s)=∑ϕ1(a)=rϕ2(b)=sP(X1=a,X2=b).P(Y_1 = r, Y_2 = s) = \sum_{\substack{\phi_1(a)=r \\ \phi_2(b)=s}} P(X_1 = a, X_2 = b) . (b) Using (a), show that P(Y1=r,Y2=s)=P(Y1=r)P(Y2=s)P(Y_1 = r, Y_2 = s) = P(Y_1 = r)P(Y_2 = s) so that Y1Y_1 and Y2Y_2 are independent.
