Problem

A uniform thin rod of length 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} and mass 3.0 kg3.0\,\text{kg} is capable of rotating in a horizontal plane about a vertical axis passing through one end and perpendicular to its length. a. (i) Show that the moment of inertia of the rod about the given axis is 13ML2\tfrac13 ML^{2}. b. (ii) The rod is set into rotation about this axis with an angular speed of 10 rad s−110\,\text{rad s}^{-1}. Calculate its rotational kinetic energy. c. (iii) If the rod were instead rotated about a parallel axis through its centre and perpendicular to its length, what angular speed would give it the same rotational kinetic energy as in part (ii)?
