Problem

Tension in a string holding a mass inside a lift a. A mass of 5 kg5\,\text{kg} is suspended from the ceiling of a lift by a light, inextensible string. Taking g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2}, calculate the tension in the string when the lift: (a) is at rest or moving with constant velocity; (b) moves upward with an acceleration of 2 m s−22\,\text{m s}^{-2}; (c) moves downward with an acceleration of 3 m s−23\,\text{m s}^{-2}; (d) is in free fall after the supporting cable snaps.
