Problem

The rectangle ABCD is divided into a square and a smaller rectangle by [XY] which is parallel to its shorter sides. The smaller rectangle BCXY is *similar* to the original rectangle, so rectangle ABCD is a golden rectangle. The ratio ABAD\frac{AB}{AD} is called the golden ratio. Show that the golden ratio is 1+52\frac{1 + \sqrt{5}}{2} .
