Problem

Let W1W_1 and W2W_2 be subspaces of a vector space VV such that W1+W2=VW_1 + W_2 = V and W1∩W2={0}W_1 \cap W_2 = \{0\}. Prove that for each vector α\alpha in VV there are unique vectors α1\alpha_1 in W1W_1 and α2\alpha_2 in W2W_2 such that α=α1+α2\alpha = \alpha_1 + \alpha_2.
