(Helium-4 nucleus with masses in SI units)
a. (i) The rest mass of a free proton is mp=1.67262×10−27kg and that of a free neutron is mn=1.67493×10−27kg. The mass of a 24He nucleus (alpha particle) is Mα=6.64466×10−27kg. Calculate its mass defect in kilograms.
b. (ii) Using c=3.00×108m s−1, compute the binding energy of the 24He nucleus in joules and then convert your answer to mega-electron-volts.
c. (iii) Find the binding energy per nucleon for 24He in MeV.
