Problem

Another important critical exponent γ\gamma is defined by saying that the susceptibility χ≡(∂M/∂H)∣H=0\chi \equiv (\partial M/\partial H)|_{H=0} diverges ∼1/∣T−Tc∣γ\sim 1/|T - T_c|^\gamma as TT approaches TcT_c. Determine γ\gamma in Landau-Ginzburg theory. [Hint: Instructively, there are two ways of doing it: (a) Add −H⃗⋅M⃗-\vec{H} \cdot \vec{M} to (1) for M⃗\vec{M} and H⃗\vec{H} constant in space and solve for M(H)M(H). (b) Calculate the susceptibility function χij(x⃗−y⃗)≡[∂Mi(x⃗)/∂Hj(y⃗)]∣H=0\chi_{ij}(\vec{x} - \vec{y}) \equiv [\partial M_i(\vec{x})/\partial H_j(\vec{y})]|_{H=0} and integrate over space.]
