Problem

Two particles with masses m1m_1, m2m_2 and velocities v1\boldsymbol{v}_1, v2\boldsymbol{v}_2 collide and stick together. Find the velocity of this composite particle and show that the loss in kinetic energy due to the collision is m1m22(m1+m2)∣v1−v2∣2.\frac{m_1 m_2}{2(m_1+m_2)}|\boldsymbol{v}_1 - \boldsymbol{v}_2|^2.
