Problem
A vertical spring with constant 250 N/m and negligible mass is attached to a horizontal plate. A block of mass 0.255 kg is dropped onto the spring which compresses by 0.12 m before coming momentarily to rest. The following two numbers are the work done by the force of gravity, Wg, and the work done by the spring, Ws, (both over the total distance that the spring is compressed).
(a) Wg=0.30 J, Ws=−1.8 J.
(b) Wg=0.30 J, Ws=1.8 J.
(c) Wg=−0.30 J, Ws=1.8 J.
(d) Wg=−0.30 J, Ws=−1.8 J.
