Problem

Suppose a,b,c,da, b, c, d are real numbers with a<ba < b and c<dc < d. Prove that ∣(a,b)∪(c,d)∣=(b−a)+(d−c) if and only if (a,b)∩(c,d)=∅.|(a, b) \cup (c, d)| = (b - a) + (d - c) \text{ if and only if } (a, b) \cap (c, d) = \varnothing.
