Problem

Suppose λ\lambda denotes Lebesgue measure on (R,L)(\mathbf{R}, \mathcal{L}), where L\mathcal{L} is the σ\sigma-algebra of Lebesgue measurable subsets of R\mathbf{R}. Show that there exist subsets EE and FF of R2\mathbf{R}^2 such that • F∈L⊗LF \in \mathcal{L} \otimes \mathcal{L} and (λ×λ)(F)=0(\lambda \times \lambda)(F) = 0; • E⊆FE \subseteq F but E∉L⊗LE \notin \mathcal{L} \otimes \mathcal{L}. [The measure space (R,L,λ)(\mathbf{R}, \mathcal{L}, \lambda) has the property that every subset of a measurable set with measure 00 is measurable. This exercise asks you to show that the measure space (R2,L⊗L,λ×λ)(\mathbf{R}^2, \mathcal{L} \otimes \mathcal{L}, \lambda \times \lambda) does not have this property.]
