Problem

A bicycle chain consists of NN freely jointed links forming a closed loop. The chain can slide freely on a smooth horizontal table. How many degrees of freedom has the chain? How many conserved quantities are there in the motion? What is the maximum number of links the chain can have for its motion to be determined by conservation principles alone?
