Problem

During a laboratory experiment an ideal gas is found to obey the relation PVn=constantP V^{n}=\text{constant} while it is taken from state 1 to state 2. The measured values are: P1=1.0×105 Pa,  V1=0.020 m3P_1=1.0\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa},\;V_1=0.020\,\text{m}^3 and P2=2.24×105 Pa,  V2=0.010 m3P_2=2.24\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa},\;V_2=0.010\,\text{m}^3. a. (a) Calculate the numerical value of the exponent nn for this process, showing all steps of your working. b. (b) Compare the obtained value of nn with the values n=1n=1 (isothermal) and n=γn=\gamma (adiabatic, with γ≈1.67\gamma\approx1.67 for a monatomic gas). State which type of process the experiment most closely represents and justify your answer. c. (c) Briefly explain two practical factors in an experimental setup that could lead to a value of nn lying between 1 and γ\gamma.
