Problem

Let VV be the set of complex numbers, regarded as a real vector space. (a) Show that (α∣β)=Re⁡(αβˉ)(\alpha|\beta) = \operatorname{Re}(\alpha\bar{\beta}) defines an inner product on VV. (b) Exhibit an (inner product space) isomorphism of VV onto R2R^2 with the standard inner product. (c) For each γ\gamma in VV, let MγM_\gamma be the linear operator on VV defined by Mγ(α)=γαM_\gamma(\alpha) = \gamma\alpha. Show that (Mγ)∗=Mγˉ(M_\gamma)^* = M_{\bar{\gamma}}. (d) For which complex numbers γ\gamma is MγM_\gamma self-adjoint? (e) For which γ\gamma is MγM_\gamma unitary? (f) For which γ\gamma is MγM_\gamma positive? (g) What is det⁡(Mγ)\det(M_\gamma)? (h) Find the matrix of MγM_\gamma in the basis {1,i}\{1, i\}. (i) If TT is a linear operator on VV, find necessary and sufficient conditions for TT to be an MγM_\gamma. (j) Find a unitary operator on VV which is not an MγM_\gamma.
