Problem

A projectile is fired from the top of a conical mound of height hh and base radius aa. What is the least projection speed that will allow the projectile to clear the mound? [Hint. Make use of the parabola of safety.] A mortar gun is placed on the summit of a conical hill of height 60 m and base diameter 160 m. If the gun has a muzzle speed of 25 m s−125\text{ m s}^{-1}, can it shell anywhere on the hillside? [Take g=10 m s−2g = 10\text{ m s}^{-2}.]
