Problem

Let nn be a positive integer. Let EE be the edge set of the complete graph KnK_n. A map f:E→Zf : E \to \mathbb{Z} is said to be an edge-coloring of KnK_n. The values of this map ff are called the colors of the edge-coloring ff. (We imagine each value f(e)f(e) to be a color assigned to the edge ee.) An edge-coloring f:E→Zf : E \to \mathbb{Z} of KnK_n is said to be Gallai if for any three distinct vertices i,j,ki, j, k, at least two of the three numbers f(ij)f(ij), f(jk)f(jk) and f(ki)f(ki) are equal (where we use the shorthand uvuv for the edge {u,v}\{u,v\}, as usual). (Visually speaking, this means that each triangle has at least two equally-colored sides.) Prove that the maximum number of colors (i.e., the maximum size of f(E)f(E)) in a Gallai edge-coloring ff of KnK_n is n−1n - 1.
