Problem

A researcher studying the properties of ions in the upper atmosphere wishes to construct an apparatus with the following characteristics: Using an electric field, a beam of ions, each having charge qq, mass mm, and initial velocity vi^v\hat{i}, is turned through an angle of 90∘90^\circ as each ion undergoes displacement Ri^+Rj^R\hat{i} + R\hat{j}. The ions enter a chamber as shown in figure and leave through the exit port with the same speed they had when they entered the chamber. The electric field acting on the ions is to have constant magnitude. Suppose the electric field is produced by two concentric cylindrical electrodes not shown in the diagram, and hence is radial. What magnitude should the field have? (1) mv22qR\frac{mv^2}{2qR} centered at AA (2) mv22qR\frac{mv^2}{2qR} centered at OO (3) mv2qR\frac{mv^2}{qR} centered at AA (4) mv2qR\frac{mv^2}{qR} centered at OO
