Statistical Mechanics of Interacting Systems: The Method of Quantized Fields — R. K. Pathria

Physics — Statistical Mechanics · second-virial-coefficient-sutherland-potential

Problem

For imperfect-gas calculations one sometimes employs the Sutherland potential u(r)=∞forr<r0u(r) = \infty \quad \text{for} \quad r < r_0 =−ε(σ/r)6forr>r0.= -\varepsilon(\sigma/r)^6 \quad \text{for} \quad r > r_0. Using this potential, determine the second virial coefficient of a classical gas. Also determine first-order corrections to the gas law and to the various thermodynamic properties of the system.
