Problem
Let F be a commuting family of diagonalizable normal operators on a finite-dimensional inner product space V and A0 the self-adjoint algebra generated by F. Let A be the self-adjoint algebra generated by F and the identity operator I. Show that
(a) A is the set of all operators on V of the form cI+T where c is a scalar and T an operator in A0.
(b) There is at most one root r of A such that r(T)=0 for all T in A0.
(c) If one of the roots of A is 0 on A0, the projections P1,…,Pk in the resolution of the identity defined by F may be indexed in such a way that A0 consists of all operators on V of the form
T=j=2∑kcjPj
where c2,…,ck are arbitrary scalars.
(d) A=A0 if and only if for each root r of A there exists an operator T in A0 such that r(T)=0.
