Problem

In the unit sphere Sp+q−1⊂Rp+qS^{p+q-1} \subset \mathbb{R}^{p+q} let Sp−1S^{p-1} and Sq−1S^{q-1} be the subspheres consisting of points whose last qq and first pp coordinates are zero, respectively. (a) Show that Sp+q−1−Sp−1S^{p+q-1} - S^{p-1} deformation retracts onto Sq−1S^{q-1}, and is in fact homeomorphic to Sq−1×RpS^{q-1}\times\mathbb{R}^p. (b) Show that Sp−1S^{p-1} and Sq−1S^{q-1} are not the boundaries of any pair of disjointly embedded disks DpD^p and DqD^q in Dp+qD^{p+q}. [The preceding exercise may be useful.]
