Problem

Show that a CW complex is contractible if it is the union of an increasing sequence of subcomplexes X1⊂X2⊂⋯X_1 \subset X_2 \subset \cdots such that each inclusion Xi↪Xi+1X_i \hookrightarrow X_{i+1} is nullhomotopic, a condition sometimes expressed by saying XiX_i is contractible in Xi+1X_{i+1}. An example is S∞S^\infty, or more generally the infinite suspension S∞XS^\infty X of any CW complex XX, the union of the iterated suspensions SnXS^n X.
