Problem

Let GG be a simple graph with V(G)≠∅V(G) \neq \varnothing. Show that the following two statements are equivalent: • Statement 1: The graph GG is connected. • Statement 2: For every two nonempty subsets AA and BB of V(G)V(G) satisfying A∩B=∅A \cap B = \varnothing and A∪B=V(G)A \cup B = V(G), there exist a∈Aa \in A and b∈Bb \in B such that ab∈E(G)ab \in E(G). (In other words: Whenever we subdivide the vertex set V(G)V(G) of GG into two nonempty subsets, there will be at least one edge of GG connecting a vertex in one subset to a vertex in another.)
