Problem

Recall that the center of a group GG is the set Z(G)={x∈G:xg=gx for all g∈G}.Z(G) = \{x \in G : xg = gx \text{ for all } g \in G\}. (a) Calculate the center of S3S_3. (b) Calculate the center of GL2(R)GL_2(\mathbb{R}). (c) Show that the center of any group GG is a normal subgroup of GG. (d) If G/Z(G)G/Z(G) is cyclic, show that GG is abelian.
