Problem

Assume that x(t)=bcos⁡(ω0t)+u(t)x(t) = b\cos(\omega_0 t) + u(t) is a solution of the van der Pol Equation 4.19. Assume that the damping parameter μ\mu is small and keep terms in u(t)u(t) to first order in μ\mu. Show that b=2ab = 2a and u(t)=−(μa3/4ω0)sin⁡(3ω0t)u(t) = -(\mu a^3/4\omega_0)\sin(3\omega_0 t) is a solution. Produce a phase diagram of x˙\dot{x} versus xx and produce plots of x(t)x(t) and x˙(t)\dot{x}(t) for values of a=1a = 1, ω0=1\omega_0 = 1, and μ=0.05\mu = 0.05.
