Problem

If a/ba/b, c/dc/d, and e/fe/f are fractions in lowest terms such that e/fe/f is the mediant of a/ba/b and c/dc/d, is it necessarily true that there is a triangle in the Farey diagram with vertices a/ba/b, c/dc/d, and e/fe/f? Give either a proof or a counterexample.
