Problem

Suppose F=C\mathbf{F} = \mathbf{C}, T∈L(V)T \in \mathcal{L}(V), and n=dim⁡V>2n = \dim V > 2. Let λ1,…,λn\lambda_1, \ldots, \lambda_n denote the eigenvalues of TT, with each eigenvalue included as many times as its multiplicity. (a) Find a formula for the coefficient of zn−2z^{n-2} in the characteristic polynomial of TT in terms of λ1,…,λn\lambda_1, \ldots, \lambda_n. (b) Find a formula for the coefficient of zz in the characteristic polynomial of TT in terms of λ1,…,λn\lambda_1, \ldots, \lambda_n.
