Problem

Let KK be a commutative ring with identity, and let DD be an alternating 2-linear function on 2×22 \times 2 matrices over KK. Show that D(A)=(det⁡A)D(I)D(A) = (\det A)D(I) for all AA. Now use this result (no computations with the entries allowed) to show that det⁡(AB)=(det⁡A)(det⁡B)\det(AB) = (\det A)(\det B) for any 2×22 \times 2 matrices AA and BB over KK.
