Problem

If XX is a finite connected graph with π1(X)\pi_1(X) free on g>0g > 0 generators, show that Hn(X;Z[π1X])H^n(X; \mathbb{Z}[\pi_1 X]) is zero unless n=1n = 1, when it is Z\mathbb{Z} when g=1g = 1 and the direct sum of a countably infinite number of Z\mathbb{Z}'s when g>1g > 1. [Use Proposition 3H.5 and compute Hcn(X~)H^n_c(\widetilde{X}) as lim→⁡Hn(X~,X~−Ti)\varinjlim H^n(\widetilde{X}, \widetilde{X} - T_i) for a suitable sequence of finite subtrees T1⊂T2⊂⋯T_1 \subset T_2 \subset \cdots of X~\widetilde{X} with ⋃iTi=X~\bigcup_i T_i = \widetilde{X}.]
