Problem

Suppose VV and WW are finite-dimensional and UU is a subspace of VV. Let E={T∈L(V,W):U⊆null⁡T}.\mathcal{E} = \{T \in \mathcal{L}(V, W) : U \subseteq \operatorname{null} T\}. (a) Show that E\mathcal{E} is a subspace of L(V,W)\mathcal{L}(V, W). (b) Find a formula for dim⁡E\dim \mathcal{E} in terms of dim⁡V\dim V, dim⁡W\dim W, and dim⁡U\dim U. Hint: Define Φ ⁣:L(V,W)→L(U,W)\Phi \colon \mathcal{L}(V, W) \to \mathcal{L}(U, W) by Φ(T)=T∣U\Phi(T) = T|_U. What is null⁡Φ\operatorname{null} \Phi? What is range⁡Φ\operatorname{range} \Phi?
