Problem

Suppose FF is a closed bounded subset of R\mathbf{R} and g1,g2,…g_1, g_2, \ldots is an increasing sequence of continuous real-valued functions on FF (thus g1(x)≤g2(x)≤⋯g_1(x) \leq g_2(x) \leq \cdots for all x∈Fx \in F) such that sup⁡{g1(x),g2(x),…}<∞\sup\{g_1(x), g_2(x), \ldots\} < \infty for each x∈Fx \in F. Define a real-valued function gg on FF by g(x)=lim⁡k→∞gk(x).g(x) = \lim_{k \to \infty} g_k(x). Prove that gg is continuous on FF if and only if g1,g2,…g_1, g_2, \ldots converges uniformly on FF to gg. [The result above is called Dini's Theorem.]
