Two non-collinear vectors P and Q lie in the x-y plane. The magnitude of P is P and that of Q is Q. The angle from P to Q, measured through the smaller rotation in the plane, is θ.
a. (i) Resolve P and Q into their respective x and y components in terms of P, Q and θ.
b. (ii) By adding the components obtained in part (i), write expressions for the components Rx and Ry of the resultant vector R=P+Q.
c. (iii) Eliminating Rx and Ry, derive the general expression
R=P2+Q2+2PQcosθ
for the magnitude R of the resultant.
d. (iv) Obtain an expression for the angle α that R makes with P in terms of P, Q and θ. Clearly state each step used in the derivation.
