Problem

An experimenter AA drops a pebble of rest mass mm in a uniform gravitational field gg. At a distance hh below AA, experimenter BB converts the pebble (with no energy loss) into a photon of frequency νB\nu_B. The photon passes by AA, who observes it to have frequency νA\nu_A. Use simple physical arguments to show that to a first approximation νBνA=1+ghc2.\frac{\nu_B}{\nu_A} = 1 + \frac{gh}{c^2}. Use this result to argue that for two stationary observers AA and BB in a weak gravitational field with potential Φ\Phi, the ratio of the rates at which their laboratory clocks run is 1+ΔΦ/c21 + \Delta\Phi/c^2, where ΔΦ\Delta\Phi is the potential difference between AA and BB.
