Problem

Consider the equilibrium 2 SO2(g)+O2(g)⇌2 SO3(g)\mathrm{2\,SO_2(g) + O_2(g) \rightleftharpoons 2\,SO_3(g)} with ΔH∘=−197 kJ mol−1\Delta H^\circ = -197\,\text{kJ\,mol}^{-1}. An equilibrium mixture at 700 K is simultaneously heated to 900 K and supplemented with additional SO2SO_2. Immediately after these changes, predict the net direction in which the reaction will shift (toward reactants, toward products, or no net change). Support your prediction by discussing (a) how KK is affected by the temperature change and (b) how QQ compares with the new KK after the addition.
