Problem

Let TT be a linear operator on the finite-dimensional space VV with characteristic polynomial f=(x−c1)d1⋯(x−ck)dkf = (x - c_1)^{d_1} \cdots (x - c_k)^{d_k} and minimal polynomial p=(x−c1)r1⋯(x−ck)rk.p = (x - c_1)^{r_1} \cdots (x - c_k)^{r_k}. Let WiW_i be the null space of (T−ciI)ri(T - c_i I)^{r_i}. (a) Prove that WiW_i is the set of all vectors α\alpha in VV such that (T−ciI)mα=0(T - c_i I)^m \alpha = 0 for some positive integer mm (which may depend upon α\alpha). (b) Prove that the dimension of WiW_i is did_i. (Hint: If TiT_i is the operator induced on WiW_i by TT, then Ti−ciIT_i - c_i I is nilpotent; thus the characteristic polynomial for Ti−ciIT_i - c_i I must be xeix^{e_i} where eie_i is the dimension of WiW_i (proof?); thus the characteristic polynomial of TiT_i is (x−ci)ei(x - c_i)^{e_i}; now use the fact that the characteristic polynomial for TT is the product of the characteristic polynomials of the TiT_i to show that ei=die_i = d_i.)
