Radiation of Electromagnetic Waves

Physics — Landau & Lifshitz · electric-dipole-radiation

Problem

A hydrogen atom in its first excited state (2p) has a mean lifetime of τ≈1.6×10−9\tau \approx 1.6 \times 10^{-9} s. Treating this as electric dipole radiation, estimate the matrix element ∣⟨1s∣r∣2p⟩∣|\langle 1s | r | 2p \rangle|. (Use ℏω=E2−E1=10.2\hbar\omega = E_2 - E_1 = 10.2 eV.)
