Problem

((a)) Show that the function taking an ordered pair ((x1,x2),(y1,y2))((x_1, x_2), (y_1, y_2)) of elements of R2\mathbf{R}^2 to ∣x1y1∣+∣x2y2∣|x_1 y_1| + |x_2 y_2| is not an inner product on R2\mathbf{R}^2. ((b)) Show that the function taking an ordered pair ((x1,x2,x3),(y1,y2,y3))((x_1, x_2, x_3), (y_1, y_2, y_3)) of elements of R3\mathbf{R}^3 to x1y1+x3y3x_1 y_1 + x_3 y_3 is not an inner product on R3\mathbf{R}^3.
