Problem

Another Proof of the Sylow Theorems. (a) Suppose pp is prime and pp does not divide mm. Show that p∤(pkmpk).p \nmid \binom{p^k m}{p^k}. (b) Let S\mathcal{S} denote the set of all pkp^k element subsets of GG. Show that pp does not divide ∣S∣|\mathcal{S}|. (c) Define an action of GG on S\mathcal{S} by left multiplication, aT={at:t∈T}aT = \{at : t \in T\} for a∈Ga \in G and T∈ST \in \mathcal{S}. Prove that this is a group action. (d) Prove p∤∣OT∣p \nmid |\mathcal{O}_T| for some T∈ST \in \mathcal{S}. (e) Let {T1,…,Tu}\{T_1, \ldots, T_u\} be an orbit such that p∤up \nmid u and H={g∈G:gT1=T1}H = \{g \in G : gT_1 = T_1\}. Prove that HH is a subgroup of GG and show that ∣G∣=u∣H∣|G| = u|H|. (f) Show that pkp^k divides ∣H∣|H| and pk≤∣H∣p^k \leq |H|. (g) Show that ∣H∣=∣OT∣≤pk|H| = |\mathcal{O}_T| \leq p^k; conclude that therefore pk=∣H∣p^k = |H|.
